Bottoms Mill was established originally as a cotton mill in 1853. It was successfully run for 60+ years by William Dugdale and John Mills, and later by the Dugdale family. In 1919 the Mill was purchased by the Cockcroft family and continued as a Mule Spinning and Weaving Mill until the Second World War, during which time it was used to store ammunition. After the war the weaving side of the business continued until the 1990’s and then on a much smaller scale until Gordon Rigg bought the mill in 2002, making it one of the last local Mills to cease trading as a Cotton Mill. Many of the original features of the working mill can still be seen today.
